How do you get around Rio de Janeiro?

  • The metro (Lines 1 and 2) links Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo, the centre and the Maracanã. It is the safest and quickest way to the stadium.
  • The VLT light rail runs around the city centre and to Santos Dumont airport.
  • App rides (Uber, 99) are widely used and cheap; use them at night instead of walking.
  • Buses are extensive but confusing for visitors; stick to the metro for match days.

Galeão International (GIG) is about 20 km north; allow 40 to 60 minutes by taxi or app ride. Santos Dumont (SDU) handles domestic flights from the city centre.

Where should you stay in Rio de Janeiro?

Copacabana

Beachfront hotels at every price, several metro stations, lively at night.

Ipanema and Leblon

Safer, more upmarket beach districts with the best restaurants; metro to the stadium with one change at most.

Botafogo

Between the beaches and the centre, good bars, cheaper than Ipanema, on the metro.

Tijuca

Closest to the Maracanã, with local bars and cheaper hotels, but far from the beaches.

Is Rio de Janeiro safe for visiting fans?

  • Petty theft is the main risk. Carry only what you need, keep your phone out of sight on the street, and don't wear jewellery.
  • Use the metro or app rides after dark rather than walking between neighbourhoods.
  • Don't visit favelas without a reputable licensed guide.
  • On match days the stadium area is heavily policed; leave with the crowd towards the metro.

What is the weather like in Rio de Janeiro in June and July?

June and July are Rio's winter: mild and mostly dry, typically 18 to 26°C, with occasional cool, rainy fronts. Beach weather on most days.
